In this post, I thought I would share my hindsight view of my first-semester experience as a transfer student at University. First off, I want to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed my first semester, but like with all things in life, there are some struggles that one comes across, and even as a 24-year-old who worked a full-time job for five years, it still was a bit overwhelming at times. I hope that my experience might help others going through this time in their lives.
I am a nontraditional student meaning that I had no clue what I wanted to do in life, so I put off college for five years and got a job right out of High School working for the University of Illinois Extension teaching nutrition. A job that lasted five years, and then I did the thing that would scare anyone, I quit and became a full-time student after working a full-time job and being a part-time student. This jump was incredibly scary, but I am alive and well through it all.
Being an older student, one comes across a few barriers, which can make it difficult to move from a life where the I know turn into I have no earthly idea what is going on. Also, the age gap was a struggle for me as well; as being 24, I was in a lot of classes where most of my classmates were 17 or 18 years old. This gap made it difficult to make friends as I was seen as the old lady in the way that I presented myself, and I had to learn to be a little freer and less strict in my time. Finding a balance between myself, the responsible adult, and the fun-loving college student was something that took many months to get away with, and honestly, I am still working on this.
Although everyone says, the worst part of going to college is moving to college and living on your own. I did not have to deal with the added stress of this since I moved into a dorm, had my sister on campus, and was only an hour from home, so I could go back whenever I needed and on the weekends. However, being away from my family at 24 was not the hardest thing to deal with, and I found myself enjoying campus life. With that being said, I found the worst part was making friends. I am an introvert, and making friends is not something I am great at. However, after a couple of weeks, I started to meet a few people here and there. The best thing I could have done was join a few clubs that met weekly, and through these clubs, I was able to meet more people with the same interests as me. Overall, my first semester started off a little rocky and nerve-racking, but I did not want to leave by the end of the semester.
I think my favorite part of going to University was meeting my professors and talking in-depth with them. I don’t get too many people to talk about history with at home so being able to stop in for office hours and discuss random historical events is some of my favorite times. Also, the professors I have are always ready to give great feedback on ways I could improve my writing which I really appreciated.
Looking back, I am so glad that I decided to take this step in life, and I cannot wait for school to start again in the fall.
Have a great day!

Today we are stepping away from history for a minute, because I want to talk about some of my favorite classics. I have always had a special spot in my heart for classic reads ever since I can remember, I loved to curl up with a classic on the front porch and read the summer afternoon away. So I thought I would recommend my top ten classics to read in no particular order. 1. Mansfield Park by Jane Austen This novel is by far my favorite Jane Austen work, so much so that I name my late cat after the main character Fanny Price. This novel is about an impoverished girl who goes to live with her wealthy family and is treated horribly. During this time, Fanny starts to have feelings for one of her cousins, who has treated her well despite the other family members’ treatment of her. I love this book simply because of the romance between the two cousins. This book also tackles some of the social problems of this time very critically which I find quite brave of Austen. I hig...
