5 Non-Romance Books

I love to read a cute romance book, but every once in a while, I crave a book that a character does not find their true love or love is not even mentioned in the book. So to celebrate the singles in the world such as myself. Here are my top five non-romance books.

Fawkes by Nadine Brandes

Fawkes is a historical fiction book with a hint of fantasy that follows Guy Fawkes’s son (Thomas) as he tries to find his father to receive the most significant honor the Igniters have their mask. Their mask are essential as whatever color mask is given to the child of an Igniter is the color they can control (so if you have a blue mask, you can control any blue object like water, grey would control things like stone, and so on). However, the people of this time are dealing with a severe plague called the Stone Plague which Thomas has in his eye. Thomas must find his father to get his mask and hopefully pardon himself from the plague he has contracted. But when Thomas meets his father, he finds that Guy Fawkes will blow up parliament. Thomas must choose to help his father and cure himself of the plague or walk away from this crime that could get him hung.

Sherlock Holmes (All of them) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Sherlock is a mastermind who goes around and solves mysteries. He uses his observation skills and pure logic to solve the mysteries he comes across. I love the stories Sir Arthur Conan Doyle writes about Sherlock. The stories are not super long, so if you are needing more books for a reading challenge, they would be a good option.

Masie Dobbs is a girl that had to go into service as her family are tenant farmers for the local high family. But Masie’s dream is to go to school, which she cannot do while in service. She finds that the family she works for has an extensive library and sneaks around to read these books after she finishes her work. After she is discovered in the library late one night, her employer calls on a local friend (Dr. Maurice) to help her prepare for school. However, after school, Masie discovers a skill that Dr. Maurice has sculpted in her. She is a whiz at solving crimes. Masie is tasked with solving her first crime and works alongside the Scotland Yard to find a killer on the loose.

The Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner

This book follows two sisters living on the outskirts of a small town that is in scary times for Jews. Their parents must leave the two sisters to help other family members in a neighboring town. The two sisters find out that their family has special powers. Both sisters try to keep their power secret from each other, and this causes some friction between them. As both girls start to grow and embrace themselves, some strange men come and cause trouble for the town girls. However, the girls must come together to save themselves and the village.

Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert

Madame Bovary is a story about a woman (Emma) who was a farmer’s daughter who marries a widower doctor (Charles) and treats him horribly. This does cover a relationship, but there is no romance. There is nothing but constant uncontent. Emma is the woman who receives everything but hates all of her life. This book is perfect for the reader who wants to read a classic but wants to read a heartbreaking and frustrating book.

Top Ten Classic Books I Recommend

Today we are stepping away from history for a minute, because I want to talk about some of my favorite classics. I have always had a special spot in my heart for classic reads ever since I can remember, I loved to curl up with a classic on the front porch and read the summer afternoon away. So I thought I would recommend my top ten classics to read in no particular order.   1. Mansfield Park by Jane Austen  This novel is by far my favorite Jane Austen work, so much so that I name my late cat after the main character Fanny Price. This novel is about an impoverished girl who goes to live with her wealthy family and is treated horribly. During this time, Fanny starts to have feelings for one of her cousins, who has treated her well despite the other family members’ treatment of her. I love this book simply because of the romance between the two cousins. This book also tackles some of the social problems of this time very critically which I find quite brave of Austen. I hig...

June Reading Wrap Up

Since traveling to Europe in June, I could not read as much as I would have liked; but I still completed some great books that I am excited to share with you. I will give a brief description, my rating, and my thoughts about the books I read.  If you want updates on what I am reading, follow me on Goodreads, where I try to keep my shelved books and current reads up to date.  https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/122472933-savanah For June, I was able to read seven books (not too bad, if I say so myself).   The First Book I completed was Reflection by Elizabeth Lim.    This book is one of the Disney twisted retellings that came out in the last few years. I was a little skeptical about this book because I am such a huge Disney fan; however, Lim did not disappoint. In this work, we follow Mulan as she must go to the Underworld to save General Shang's life; she faces many struggles and has help from a few new sidekicks. I highly recommend reading t...

Books I Read for my First Semester at Four Year University.

After transferring from a community college, I found that my reading schedule increased dramatically. In today’s post, I thought I would share the books I read in my first semester at a four-year university. Although the amount of reading I had to do in school increased, the content I was reading became much more helpful. While in community college, the required books were very general and tended not to provide a variety of opinions in most cases. However, most books were supplemented with other articles and self-guided research. I will not show all of the reading material I read through because this would be a very long post, and some classes just gave me bits and pieces of different works. So here are the books I bought and studied in my sophomore-level college class at four-year. In my first semester, I took six classes for 16-credit hours. I took: ·          Health 110 ·          Fir...
