August TBR

It is that time again when I pick my TBR for the month. I will be starting school at the end of the month, so I will be pretty busy getting ready, moving in, and beginning syllabus week. That said, I hope to get through these books before things start getting crazy. So, without further ado, here is my TBR for August in no particular order.

1.       The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien

I feel like I am the only reader who has not read this series. I listened to the Hobbit in 2021 and enjoyed it, but I wish I would have physically read it as I had some problems keeping all of the characters straight. So I am continuing these series in physical format to help me focus on the storyline. This edition’s cover is not ideal but inside are incredible maps which I already love to look through. I am probably most excited about this read.

2.       The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

This is one of the most famous Agatha Christie books and my first. I have recently gotten into the mystery genre and hope this book lives up to the hype I have seen on BookTube.  The only thing I know about this book is that it has a big twist at the end. I am looking forward to this read.

3.       The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck

This is a Historical Fiction book about women who have lost their husbands in the resistance during the Second World War. These women try to uphold their husband’s mission and fight their Nazis oppressors. Other than that, I don’t know much about the book or the author. But the concept seems right up my alley.

4.       Scavenge The Stars by Tara Sim

I have heard nothing about this book, but I found it at Barnes and Noble a couple of months ago and had to have it. This book seems to be about a girl who is a slave on a debtor’s boat seeking revenge. This is book one of duology.

5.       Circe by Madeline Miller

I read Song of Achilles by this author, and I thought I would finish the series because everyone is saying they enjoyed Circe more than the first book, which I did not care for. I love Greek Mythology, so I am hoping this one delivers.

As you can probably see, I did not include any history books, and that is just because I feel like I need a bit of escapism before classes begin. If you have any thoughts about the books above, please let me know in the chat!

Have a great day!

Savanah

Top Ten Classic Books I Recommend

Today we are stepping away from history for a minute, because I want to talk about some of my favorite classics. I have always had a special spot in my heart for classic reads ever since I can remember, I loved to curl up with a classic on the front porch and read the summer afternoon away. So I thought I would recommend my top ten classics to read in no particular order.   1. Mansfield Park by Jane Austen  This novel is by far my favorite Jane Austen work, so much so that I name my late cat after the main character Fanny Price. This novel is about an impoverished girl who goes to live with her wealthy family and is treated horribly. During this time, Fanny starts to have feelings for one of her cousins, who has treated her well despite the other family members’ treatment of her. I love this book simply because of the romance between the two cousins. This book also tackles some of the social problems of this time very critically which I find quite brave of Austen. I hig...

June Reading Wrap Up

Since traveling to Europe in June, I could not read as much as I would have liked; but I still completed some great books that I am excited to share with you. I will give a brief description, my rating, and my thoughts about the books I read.  If you want updates on what I am reading, follow me on Goodreads, where I try to keep my shelved books and current reads up to date.  https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/122472933-savanah For June, I was able to read seven books (not too bad, if I say so myself).   The First Book I completed was Reflection by Elizabeth Lim.    This book is one of the Disney twisted retellings that came out in the last few years. I was a little skeptical about this book because I am such a huge Disney fan; however, Lim did not disappoint. In this work, we follow Mulan as she must go to the Underworld to save General Shang's life; she faces many struggles and has help from a few new sidekicks. I highly recommend reading t...

5 Non-Romance Books

I love to read a cute romance book, but every once in a while, I crave a book that a character does not find their true love or love is not even mentioned in the book. So to celebrate the singles in the world such as myself. Here are my top five non-romance books.   Fawkes by Nadine Brandes   Fawkes is a historical fiction book with a hint of fantasy that follows Guy Fawkes’s son (Thomas) as he tries to find his father to receive the most significant honor the Igniters have their mask. Their mask are essential as whatever color mask is given to the child of an Igniter is the color they can control (so if you have a blue mask, you can control any blue object like water, grey would control things like stone, and so on). However, the people of this time are dealing with a severe plague called the Stone Plague which Thomas has in his eye. Thomas must find his father to get his mask and hopefully pardon himself from the plague he has contracted. But when Thomas meets...
