We all have books that have stuck with us from childhood; they are the stories that become part of us, and a small part of us want to be part of them. There are so many times when I think of the books I loved as a child, and I wish to read them for the first time again and feel the sense of adventure and expectation again. Honestly, it is like a high. Since these books are such a part of me, I wanted to share some of my childhood favorites with you all. So here are my top 5 favorite and most thought-provoking books from my childhood.
1. Sign of the Beaver
This book is about a family living in the early settlements of America who move from their home to a western part of Maine. But, the family’s mother is pregnant and cannot go until after the baby is born. So the men of the house (the father and 12-year-old Matt) must go and build and set up the house. But Matt will have to stay in the wilderness while Father returns for the rest of the family. But Matt’s family is delayed, he has no contact with anyone, and his food is running out. Will his family ever come back? Matt meets a Native boy around his age, and their friendship saves his life.

2. Across Five Aprils
This was the first book I read set in my home state of Illinois. I loved the main character Jethro who grew up on a farm and reminded me of the stories I was told about some of my ancestors. This story is about a Jethro growing up while the American Civil War is beginning. While his brothers go to war and his family is split between Union and Confederates, how the family deals with the realities of war. After reading this book, I became obsessed with the Civil War and wanted to read any book I could about this point in history.

3. The Witch of Blackbird Pond
This story is about a girl (Kit) who moves to America from an Island after her parents die. She is sent to her relatives, who are Puritans, and she has to conform to a new home and way of life during the most challenging times as the witch trials are going on. The Puritan community is looking for any woman who might hold evil powers. When Kit comes across a Quaker woman known as a witch in hiding, she tries to help her friend. Will Kit get caught, and what will happen to her if she is? This story forces children to look at the unfair judgment and do what is right even if it endangers you.

4. The Whipping Boy
This is the story of two boys, one an orphan (Jemmy) and one a prince (Prince Brat). Jemmy is taken to the palace to pay for any punishment the Prince commits because the King refuses to punish his son but whips the whipping boy while the Prince watches. This is not an effective parenting system as the prince becomes a horrible child and does not care about his actions. The boys run away, and we follow Jemmy and the princes’ adventure as they travel.
